Inside the Capital Region

Located in the eastern part of New York State, the Capital Region is a massive stretch of land that covers 5,199 square miles. The Capital Region is made up of eight counties and houses the Schenectady, Albany, Saratoga, and Troy areas. This region has a bustling economy that focuses heavily on nanotechnology and biotech life sciences.
The location of the Capital Region contributes to its economic growth in knowledge-based and high tech industries. With the convergence of the Mohawk and Hudson rivers, close vicinity to the northeast markets, and the intersection of two major interstate highways it’s no wonder that the Capital Region is experiencing an economic boom. It doesn’t hurt that the 1.1 million residents of the region, with a workforce of 568,600, make the Capital Region the thriving commercial hub that it is.
There are a number of amazing features that the Capital Region has to offer:
Port Services

Nestled against the deep water port of Albany Rensselaer, there’s no reason that the Capital Region wouldn’t offer port services for its residents. The port is accessible year-round due to a 32-foot channel and services ships that stretch 750 feet in length and weigh 50,000 tons. The port of Albany Rensselaer is located 124 nautical miles north of New York City.
Air Services

The Albany International Airport is the premier air hub that serves the Capital Region, Western New England, and Northeastern New York. Millions of dollars have been invested into making the Albany International Airport state of the art in a massive redevelopment project that was completed in 2000. The new additions include an air traffic control tower, a 230,000 square foot terminal, a cargo facility, and a parking garage. Multiple airlines service this airport. These include US Airways Express, United Airlines, and Delta Airlines amongst others.
Rail Service

The Capital Region also receives rail service from the Albany Port Railroad Corp (supervised by CSX and CP Rail Systems). The region is provided with both intermodal and passenger freight facilities that cross the Mid-Atlantic states, the Northeast, and Canada.
Highways

The most common form of transportation in the Capital Region, as it is anywhere else in the United States, is by automobile. The Capital Region is connected to New York City by the New York State Thruway. There is also the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) and the Northway (I-87) that connects the region to western New York State and the Canadian highway system at Montreal respectively.
